Cowan brothers join Southern Nationals for opening weekend; Gavin scores fourth-place finish in Black Gold 53

On Friday afternoon, Gavin Cowan took the Rum Runner Racing No. 219 to Beckley (W.Va.) Motor Speedway on Friday afternoon for the Schaeffer's Oil Southern Nationals season opener.

With 26 Late Models checked in for the Black Gold 53, Cowan dealt with mechanical problems in qualifying which forced him to start at the tail of the B-Main. Charging to the runner-up spot, Gavin started 20th in the 53-lap main event and blasted through the competition to a Top-5 finish in fourth.

Being joined by his brother Haiden at Wythe Raceway (Rural Retreat, Va.) on Saturday, Gavin rolled to a sixth-place finish in the $10,053-to-win feature while Haiden was a no show due to mechanical issues.

Wrapping up the opening weekend at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tenn.) on Sunday, both brothers missed the A-Main after not transferring through a B-Main, but Gavin was able to secure a provisional starting spot. Making up three spots in the 40-lap feature, Cowan finished 19th.

Gavin currently sits fifth in the point standings.
